Trying on New Clothes

In my dreams I am World Renowned Photographer.

I am beautiful, tall, elegant and statuesque.  The world is my oyster and I am the Pearl of Great Price.  I have Terrence Howard in my bedroom … and I am a World Renowned Photographer.

Then I wake up and I’m plain old Jane with a big nose and a chip on her shoulder.

I won’t give up dreaming though.  With a basic camera, no fancy equipment and limited knowledge, I am making a cautious foray into the world of macro photography.  Thanks to my fairly wild compound, I have quite a collection of photography subjects right outside my door.  I know I have a lot to learn and I need to get into the subjects closer and to give them more detail and depth and I need to respond to the lighting more and sharpen my focus.

I was a little nervous about sharing these photographs on this blog until I read this quote by the late great Ernst Haas,

“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.”

So here goes …

Slept through my agriculture class, so I have no idea what this weed is.  I was misinformed that it was a mustard flower.  Turns out my dad doesn’t know everything.

huh? did you say something? who wants to be your next ‘subject’? me! me! me! me!
    eh mama…nice.

  3. BEAUTIFUL!

    How amazing are these pictures?!

You are tall and beautiful and your nose isn’t that big!

  4. thank you for mentioning my blog on your page. i’m flattered. you have some great work yourself!

  5. I know that this might sound wrong, but consider it a compliment to you and your skills; the ones of the housefly and the cockroach made me home-sick. Seriously.

  6. If the whole of it was in focus, I might be able to tell you what flower that was. I thought it was a Mexican marigold at first but the bulbuous part below the petals is too thick for it to be that.

Anyway, impressed by the pea photo. I can almost feel the texture of the leaf.

  7. The last drop(s) of the day were way too kewl Tumwi
It looks amazing, and on the laptop it has a really dope resolution so it (they all) looks even better!
Once again, just like the series on arbitrary beauty, i thank you for dropping these up or putting these down…

    Whatever!

And er…. i wonder how we can make Terrence know about the best blog in Uganda, according the 2007 UBOB Awards….

  8. The rain drops are breathtaking.Gal,you are good much as you think its all in a dream.
@b2b;say,can’t we do that Oprah thing, making dreams come true, we could deliver the dude at her door step or rather her bedroom door or is it bathroom door…

  9. You don’t have a big nose.

  10. good lord woman!

those are the most beautifully honest pix i have seen in a long tym, u dont mind if i download them, do u?
    they’re beautiful.

p.s. i dunno abt statutesque, me i’m a bum man and i’ll be proud to share that i have seen urs and lawdalmighty, it musta been carved by michaelangelo himself!

  11. I love these. You are a brilliant photographer. This coming from someone who loves to take pictures but doesn’t even understand

“I know I have a lot to learn and I need to get into the subjects closer and to give them more detail and depth and I need to respond to the lighting more and sharpen my focus.”

Do you want to guess how much I have to learn?

  12. How many megapixels does your camera have?

  13. Thanks for mentioning my blog. I’ve only been taking photographs since August and started out with no knowledge of photography, just a strong art background. And my equipment was basic, though I admit I have been fully bitten by that nasty photo bug and am upgrading as I can.

The pea leaf photo is great. A perfect capture.

So your goal is to stay with macro? – mostly nature, or anything small? I started out taking only wildflowers and now you can find nearly anything on the blog. :-) so you never quite know what path you will follow.

  14. I know diddley-squat about photography. But I know about beautiful pictures. Like who is taking my wedding pictures. Because I saw these wedding pictures he took and they were amazing! Not too much focus on the smiling bride and groom. But beautiful. So you’re also invited.
These pictures are beautiful. Don’t let teachers steal that from you. Photography teachers I mean.

  15. say tumwi, just how much ‘doom’ did u use to get that cockroach to look that dead? circle of life= you buy ‘doom’, you kill cockroach, bugs feed on cockroach, they get in your food, make you sick, you die, you turn into…. wait, this post is about photographs. excuse my mind. i tend to get carried away…
those pics are beautiful i dare say

  16. Fabulosity! Hey i can invent words, right? I have sent a friend with interests this link. Jack of all trades is a dude, what do we call a chick of the same incline?

  17. Curious..ummm yes- curious- there is surely more where those pics came from…should dedicate all the time to look at them when I am awake! (wink!)

  18. We share dreams! How coincidental! Thanks to 31337 I was able to come across this post. Photography rocks! Macro photography especially so! You’ve just inspired me to put in one post some of the macro work I’ve done. And inspired me to go out and do more of it.

  19. when are you quitting your current job? I’ll organise your first photo exhibition free of charge!

  20. Found you by way of EGm above– wow, great photos, exquisite!

  21. Wow. Didn’t see them at first, then it came into focus. Your cockroach has tiny ants on them. It surprised me — and gave me the willies. Awesome.
