Every Thursday The New Vision publishes a pullout called Local Leader that is intended examine local political trends, the work of Members of Parliament and local council officials, as well as district and municipal developments. An interesting section in the Local Leader is a small column called “Ask Your Local Leader” in which members of the public are encouraged to write to their MPs asking them to account for their activities in the House.
Sometimes, these questions lead to good discussions on parliamentary business and the work of the MPs. Other times, like today, the arrogance and flippant attitude of MPs towards public concerns makes me wonder why we bother to have local leaders in the first place.
