Books: Expanding Your Horizons … Or Not

My all-time favorite ‘books’ are a dictionary and an atlas.  A dictionary because of the possibilities of language and an atlas because despite everything we know, we really know nothing at all.

 

I was recently surprised with a gift of two new books: Ptolemy’s “Geography”: An Annotated Translation of the Theoretical Chapters translated by J. Lennart Berggren and Alexander Jones and To the Ends of the Earth: 100 Maps That Changed the World by Jeremy Harwood.  You know a guy is really trying when he patiently listens as you harp on about ancient cartography and then buys you books to feed your obsession.  Perhaps I should give him a chance …
