(Maybe not) A Succession Plan

So Yoweri Museveni finally did it.  He appointed his wife, Janet Kataaha Museveni, a minister in the cabinet of Uganda.

Janet Museveni – First Lady, Ruhaama County Member of Parliament, State Minister for Karamoja and Second-in-Line to the Ugandan Throne.  All hail!

Maybe I’m just being silly, simplistic and cynical.  After all, El Señor Presidente dropped his scandal-dogged brother, General Salim Saleh as Micro-Finance State Minister and appointed his one-time rival for the presidential seat, Aggrey Awori, as ICT Minister.

Perhaps this appointment is Yoweri Museveni’s way of sending a message of solidarity to the people of Karamoja.  Perhaps he hopes that the bevy of brown nose humanitarian types who support his wife’s every cause will transfer their ‘goodwill’ to developmental programs in Karamoja.  Perhaps a picture of Mama Janet cuddling a snotty nosed Karamojong baby will be good PR for the Museveni government.

Still, I can’t shake this ominous feeling …

**P.S. The blogger at Between a Rock and a Hard Place is discussing “Uganda’s Next President.” I’m a little biased where he’s concerned, but you should give it a read.

  1. i was also haharing this nominations and reshuffles

  2. don’t think she will be the one to take over when he finally decides to let go…

  3. Does that mean she has to go and live in Kja?!

  4. My heart is still pulsing with the possibilities.

  5. Will she breastfeed a hunger stricken baby whose mother can’t produce breast milk?

  6. Oba what is that about? Lets try and be objective…I’ve failed. I do not understand half the stuff that guy comes up with; so i will not even bother with this one.

  7. Lol Joshi! Where did that thought come from?

  8. That blog, was a tedious read…with hardly any relevance to the said title except for the company he kept with the family. Maybe I’m cranky because of the heat.

  9. Francis Impuga in ‘Betrayal In the City’ said, “When the madness of an entire nation disturbs a solitary mind, it is not enough to say the man is mad”. He did not give us the opposite of ‘when the madness of a solitary mind disturbs a nation….’ Perhaps someone can come up with something.

  10. Anon…I am laughing while agreeing with you..naye what was Sevo upto?

  11. Honestly, we are all being taken to the slaughter and we are just too comfortable to be bothered.

  12. Me I’m worried for the poor woman and how much work she has to do. I mean take care of Ruhama in Parliament and then of Karamoja and still be a First Lady!!! Can’t he give his wife a break?

  13. Really Carlo? That is all that bugs you about this situation? You must be at peace with yourself. I admire that in people. there is a war in my head. All the time!

  14. Carlo, how considerate of you. Atlease she has no hair to worry about. Shouldn’t be too difficult, she won’t have to drive on Nasasira’s bad roads…she could fly over to wherever she must go for photo shoots and visions.

  15. People, this is a move to keep the first lady busy else where(distraction!).I am not sure she will be pleased with this appointment.

  16. psss..whisper, whisper..(barely audible)perhaps the fact that Karamoja may have Uganda’s greatest mineral wealth may have absolutely nothing to do with this…

Carlo ..you are right Poor Maama Janet..it will surely be a lot of work and not rewarding or influential in any way.

  17. Anon..that’s a great observation.

  18. “Maybe I’m just being silly, simplistic and cynical.”

    … and maybe you’re not.

Sheesh. I just hope your guy doesn’t give our guy any ideas.

  19. When we were in school, our Headmistress was nominated to be a Commissioner on the Electoral Commission, we were thrilled mostly because we mostly hated her guts. She was later rejected and the reason we heard was because her husband was already on the Education Service Commission and it did not seem fair to have two people from the same family with so much authority???!!!!Need to spread it around or something these were simple commissions…different commissions…clearly the principles for vetting cabinet nominees are different. No questions whatsoever of conflict of authority arise here.

  20. Kenyanchick ..haha Mama No Nonsense Lucy in parliament would be so entertaining …haha. I love that idea!!! The comics would have a laugh ..can you imagine how much material that would give guys like Mr. Ndambuki on Churchill Live ? LOL.

  21. ki ka! thats all im saying

  22. Oi! They’re at it again! I’m terrified.

  23. My question is, how will she do the job when she can’t exactly identify or speak the language for that matter?.
    This hurts.

  24. i don’t agree that this is in any way leading to succession, but i would agree with the-keeping her busy else where part and getting her off certain thing. i do believe that the first lady is one of the people who disagrees with what “these people” are doing (or want to do) like, when she askt mbabazi to apologise n resign, that din’t go down well with certain people.

  25. At least you guys don’t have Lucy Kibaki… BIG consolation…
