Mufuruki, Officially.

I got the T-shirt. Yay!

Mufuruki officially 1

Mufuruki officially 2

The Cotton Revolution, perhaps it should be called.

Thank you Mufuruki in Costa Rica for the heads up about the shirts. Thank you British Mufuruki in Uganda for bringing them to me.

If you want your own T-shirt, it’s only 8k, contact Joe on 0751811479.

  1. What in the world is a “mufuruki?”

    • A mufuruki is a derogatory term used in parts of western Uganda to describe non-indigenous people.

In your case, KC, a Kikuyu living in Nakuru would be a mufuruki. The Kalenjin living in Voi would be Bafuruki. During the post-election violence in Kenya, mobs would have been shouting, “Kill the Bafuruki.”

Everyone in Uganda is a mufuruki. The fathers of our fathers’ fathers came from somewhere not here. In this fast-shrinking earth, we’re all moving and settling and growing. It’s time to take the word back. It’s time to stop the madness before it begins.

      - Tumwi on the soapbox, out.

  2. Can i have one as well, pliiiiiiiiiiiz!

  3. I like this concept and the shirt grabbed me immediately …

… for a monent I thought ‘what the furuk is bafuruki?’ … thanks for the explanation …

  7. Things of tribe and race bore me beyond tears. I don’t know where I came from, only that I am here and living it. Oh, and loving my Mufuruki man and son.

  8. thank you tumwi. so going to get one…

  9. Really cool, but I worry it may not be politically savvy for me to wear one just yet. Really. I just want to learn ‘the’ language, blend in, live the life.
Always thought Mufuruki means immigrant -apparently you can be an one in your own country.

  10. it is not a derogatory term. it is simply a word that has been used wrongly.

  11. Thanks for the explanation, Tumwi!

“Internal immigrants.” I wish that were an alien concept in Kenya. It’s amazing what East Africans have chosen to concentrate on in the 21st century, isn’t it? Sometimes I despair…

  15. In our world and lives we spend so much time hating resenting and labeling, it makes me angry to see black on black violence. This is a great way to deal with this kind of ignorance driven hatred “Mmufuruki”….
