Death of the Watchdog?

A little-reported event occurred at City Hall in Kampala on Saturday.

Members of the Uganda Journalists’ Association voted for a new executive. (Full disclosure: I’m not a member.)

To summarize the chaotic proceedings, it was a joke.  Chaos over the association’s constitution, armed police barring observers, allegations of voter bribing, the works!

And then there was the ghost of the Ushs 150 million ‘donated’ to the association by President Yoweri Museveni hovering in the air.

This candidate pulled out of the election.  His letter on why is available here.

Considering that the 2011 general elections are around the corner, do you trust the media to ‘protect’ your vote?

For background on Uganda Journalists’ Association, read this analysis from Daily Monitor’s Daniel Kalinaki available here.  A more recent op/ed piece from Mr. Kalinaki is also online here.

Joachim Buwembo further discusses the matter on the African Centre for Media Excellence website here.

  1. The rot in our society is relentless, everything is for sale.

  2. Do you know what? Uganda no longer has true journalists. I have seen many papers especially the Red paper and the New Vision writing articles which are biased to one party.

  3. Of course it would be little reported. What is WRONG with us?

  4. When that money was received from the president I knew it would never be used for anything good. I think too many scandals at UJA for the last decade have kept away many good journalists. It’s a shame

  5. I have watched the press integrity go to the dogs in the last few years. I wonder why the people at Red Pepper do not get shut down! yet newspapers like the Daily Monitor write a little something and they arrest their journalists.
The men and women of Red Pepper take money from people with threats of writing about them if they don’t pay. They normally ask for anywhere from 20,000/= to 200,000/= and if you don’t pay, they go ahead and totally make something up. They will even stretch the story for weeks just so they can embarass the victim more.
This recently happened to a friend of mine.
I ask, where are we going? Where is Uganda going?
